Preoperative Acetaminophen Use in Hysterectomy to Reduce Postoperative Opioid Consumption
نویسنده
چکیده
Background: Hysterectomy is a common surgery amongst females and is occasionally considered a same-day outpatient surgery. There is a lack of adequate postoperative pain control thus leading to extended use of postoperative opioid use. As a result, in addition to other postoperative side effects, patients suffer from adverse side effects of opioid use, including sedation, respiratory depression, constipation, nausea, and pruritus. This indirectly prolongs patients’ hospital stay and recovery. There have been recent studies suggesting non-opioids, such as acetaminophen, could decrease opioid use postoperatively. The aim of this review is to evaluate whether preoperative acetaminophen use will decrease postoperative opioid use within the first 24-hours after a hysterectomy. Methods: An exhaustive literature search of available medical literature was performed using MEDLINEOvid, Web of Science, and CINAHL-Ebscohost.

Fibromyalgia survey criteria are associated with increased postoperative opioid consumption in women undergoing hysterectomy.
BACKGROUND The current study was designed to test the hypothesis that the fibromyalgia survey criteria would be directly associated with increased opioid consumption after hysterectomy even when accounting for other factors previously described as being predictive for acute postoperative pain. METHODS Two hundred eight adult patients undergoing hysterectomy between October 2011 and December 2...

متن کاملPreemptive analgesic effects of intravenous paracetamol in total abdominal hysterectomy.
OBJECTIVES Paracetamol is primarily thought to be a cyclooxygenase inhibitor acting through the central nervous system. Indirect effects of paracetamol are through the serotoninergic system as a non-opioid analgesic. In this study, total abdominal hysterectomy patients were given intravenous (iv) paracetamol 1 g preoperatively or intraoperatively to assess its postoperative analgesic effects. ...
